Newspapers are so yesterday!

Social media has taken over the journalist job, you probably asking yourself how that is possible. While most of us have access to cell phones and I’m not talking about your Nokia 3310, oh no no that is ancients’ news, I’m referring to your blackberries and your other smart phones. I think you know where I’m heading with this, as we have access to all those ‘’fancy” phones we are able to take pictures, send videos and share them on our social networks.

In the past the only way we could be informed about a certain story was through journalist because they had the power back then to send information and keep us informed, and they were the gatekeepers of what news we need to be informed about, but now all that has changed drastically since everyone is a citizen journalist. People like Loyiso Gola have made news more fun and witty to read, who would buy a newspaper after he’s fun tweets, why go all the way to the shops to buy a newspaper when we can read and download apps like news 24 on our phones, tablets and laptops.

It’s cheaper I’m mean ‘’duh” who does not want to save in this day and age, R8.00 goes a long way baba.  We no longer depend on journalist cause we sometimes get news even before the journalist do, let me give you an example, remember the video that was taken by the prison warder while having sex with a police women on duty SIES!, while that video was send to a colleague and the next thing it went viral within seconds and it only appeared in the newspapers the following Monday. The best thing about Citizen Journalism is that we do not have to wait for journalist to inform us, but we can actually inform each other by just posting on your face book account, twitter handle and even on YouTube.
Five advantages of using social media.
·         It is cost effective (cheap)
·         You receive news instantly.
·         It serves as a two way communication
·         It is a good way to create awareness for a brand or product.
·         You can act as a citizen journalist

  1. I think the job of the journalist is now to just fix any misinformation or fill in missing pieces. Anyone is a journalist now, anyone can provide news and post a video of an event happening live on social media. Nobody buys newspapers anymore, you subscribe online and get the news. It's tough to know the role of the journalist in these days.

    1. I fully agree with you, citizen journalism are taking over the journalist jobs, and I am happy cause we can no longer sit and wait for the news to inform us about something that happened hours ago,
And we can not wait for the next day to buy a news paper just to be informed about a certain event. Social media and citizen journalism has made our lives so much easier by informing one another instantly when an event has just occurred, like the tremor that happened on Tuesday I did not feel anything but I could actually read about it on twitter and Facebook.

  2. I agree. Having the ability and opportunity to be a current news anchor in the comfort of your environment is such a privilege and a fun thing. News break out all the time, and in this fast paced world we live in, we do not have the time to wait for 7pm news, so it is more convenient for us to go on Twitter and read up on all the trending news there. How awesome is that? Pretty cool.

  3. Ya right, that feeling when you are an acting journalist with out any qualification, but than you have the same power of the journalist to distribute news at any given time, that's pretty much awesome news for everyone one who has a smart phone. Living in this fast paced world, I bet you everyone will be sitting at home and doing there work online, cause the Web 2.0 world is taking over.

  5. Yes, it is more interactive and they don't use jargon. unlike pageing through a news paper just to find a story, so with social media it is simple and easy to understand and the best part is that we can even give our opinion on that certain topic, I think that's great stuff.

    1. I agree with you, what digital newspapers need to do is get straight to the point and focus on facts, because online readers read slower than print media readers.

  8. I agree girl, the public have now become citizen journalists, and most news feeds come from them, but ethically speaking, we totally need journalists to clarify any misinformation and to research more on the matter to give us a more credible feed.

    1. I totally agree with you, if journalist can form a relationship with citizen journalism, than they could actually work very well together, journalist will only have to give us the hardcore facts and state if the news is ethical or not, since they are more qualified in their field

  11. I agree that print media is late, with social news can travel fast and easy but we still need journalists to create news that have sense too,so the better thing for journalists to do is to move with time and meet the standard of the audience

  13. Involving jornalists in social media enables the news spread even more. One thing again is that PR itself uses media innovatively. I say PR is still needed however hard copies of news papers does not do for me, hence mobile technology prevails to assist in media.

  14. Yes I do agree with you, that print media is kind of old fashioned, and that it needs to move with time, cause people are not interested in buying them, They are now more intrigued with social media cause its faster and convenient to use

  15. No! I don't think we still need journalists anymore because citizen journalism has taken over, I mean who still sits and waits for the news to be broadcast on the radio for instance, when you can instantly get news feeds on social media easier and in a few seconds.
